Ubuntu Natty workaround for Acer Aspire 4736 (Intel GMA 4500)

Only thought that only me having this weird problem. 

Symptoms:

Upgrade/New Installation to Ubuntu Natty (11.04) will result a blank screen after grub. You can hear the login sound but screen is blank.

Workaround 1 (if you can enter ubuntu)

• Boot into failsafe mode and select boot in failsafe low graphic session. It will boot to low graphic sessions.
• Edit grub (sudo nano /etc/default/grub), add “acpi_ios=Linux” at line says:
• GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash “acpi_osi=Linux”
• Edit rc.local (sudo nano /etc/rc.local), add “setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00” just before exit 0

• At grub loader screen, press “e” and add “acpi_osi=Linux” after quiet splash
• Press F10 and boot

Mini Review Ubuntu Lucid Lynx

It’s been 3 days now using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. You might want me to give two thumbs up. No, that is not going to happen. Actually quite disappointing with this new notification thing and ‘clean’ UI. Here are some list that need to be improve.

1. Notification now sucks. You dont even know it will notify you or not. For instance, Empathy notify with green icon and thats it. No blinking or whatsoeva.

2. In Karmic, as we log-in we can click the status icon to log in to empathy, now in Lucid, even harder, supposed to be simpler. Now I have to click the menu can click the Empathy icon to connect to my IMs. Fail

3. Gwibber is totally not functioning. Better off using Yoono.

I hope the next update will improve much better as I will be still using ubuntu.

Hello Lucid Lynx. Wanda The Fish Dead.

Yesterday manage to dist-upgrade my karmic kaola. nice and smooth transition, no major glitch (have to uninstall evo, not even use it). and wow. Empathy is still there, plus Gwibber (Social Chat) but keep crashing. Overall it is nice. 

Also manage to install dropbox,its just work. Not like Ubuntu One, keep syncing. I also have wanda the fish applet, and today the fish died. Oh got, since when the fish died. I click the applet and it said ‘The water needs changing’ and one little label stated ‘Look at the date’, cheh, April Fool. Wow it got me.

How to change MTU size in Linux (all flavors)

A note to self.

We have a vpn issue where it is connected but can do nothing(ping etc.). Boss gave an idea maybe some MTU because of previous incident we have.

Fire up terminal.

/sbin/ifconfig usb0 mtu 1492 up

Viola, it can ping and even load some java apps on webs.
