Top 10 Android Apps for Newbie and Advanced User from More Cowbell

Top 10 Android Apps from More Cowbell!

It’s been a year since I migrated to Android OS with HTC Dream. The phone is now 2 years old and still going strong thanks to Google for opensourcing the Android OS and the community for the effort of hacking the core of Android. For a year I have been installing/uninstalling the apps from the Market and now More Cowbell brought to you some of my top 10 recommendation apps for Android

    1. Gapps

It will be shame not to mention the core, out of the box apps provided by Google, the Gapps it self: GMail, Contacts, and Calendars. If you new to Android, you can use Contact on your Gmail to store all your phonebook contacs. Once connected it will sync your contacts.

GMail is the primary apps, it is use to activated your phone and now it will push your mail to your android phone. Not the best client but it will keep you updated.

Google Calendar now is on your phone, if you use google calendar extensively like me, you will find it useful enough.

    2. SMSBackup

How about this, backup all your sms online thru GMail? How cool is that. Simple apps, install and configure your username and password, it will automatically backup all your sms to your GMail account via Labels.

    Download for SMSBackup

    3. Toshl

Hard to keep track expenses, where did you spend it?, lost a receipt. Toshl is here to help. Every now and then, is hard for me to keep track my expenses, toshl is expenses tracker, by key in your expenses and with simple tags, it will save to your phone and sync to the services. On the phone it will produce basic track record of your expenses, which you widely use your money to, and from the web, it will create a graph and even export your expenses to pdf,xls for your pleasure.

    Download For Toshl

    4. Endomondo

Marathon junkie? or just like to run like Forrest Gump? Endomondo is the best sports tracker apps? It got so many features for the phone itself and the services on their website. Install it, set whether to run, biking, and press start. It will track your pace and map your route via google maps. Endomondo also actively run contest on their web, named: Endomondo Global Challenge where you can win prizes by just running? Cool eh?

    Download for Endomondo

    5. K-9 Mail

Hate the default Email apps come with Android. We are in the same boat. Enter K-9 Mail. Probably the best email client for android out there. Simple registration with new account, detects automatically the settings, key in username and password, now you are ready to use. You can swipe your screen to move to the next mail, now that is cool. Other than that you will have to keep explore it. If you kinda guy who live off the edge, try install the beta, warning, it will eat your cats alive.

    Download for K-9 Mail

    6. Mileage

The title says it all. A milage tracker to keep track of your gasoline/oil usage for your car. Simple yet powerful apps, just need the current odometer, gas price and gas litre. It will calculate the longest km you used and even export to various format and can be attached with your claim form.

    Download for Mileage

    7. SpringPad

SpringPad is a free application thats lets you quickly and save the ideas and information you came accros everyday. Anything you have in mind, ideas, bookmarks, recipes, task, movie anything. Some said that it is same as Evernote for iPhone and we android user does not need Evernote, and the best part it is free. I mainly use it for jotting down ideas and bookmarking websites (now I rarely used delicious and bookmark tools). Now only if they have apps for linux. It would be great!

    Download for SpringPad

    8. Dropbox

Dropbox is the best single apps. It just works, everywhere, be it linux, windows, mac and now on your android. You can sync all your document files, project files, accross the cloud. I have used it on my Ubuntu laptop and now on my android phone. Mark the founder said on his recent interviews “you don’t need usb thumbdrive in near future”.

    Download for Dropbox

    9. ES File Explorer/ES Task Manager

It is not complete in my list if there is no file manager application. I have been using ES File Explorer and ES Task Manager for almost 4 months, and I have to say it is one of the best file manager application for android. And if you are low in memory with ES Task Manager, with one click widget, it will kill all apps on the background and freeing up your memory.

    Download for ES File Explorer

    Download for ES Task Manager

    10. Touiteur

I have used many twitter client for android: twidroid, twicca, twitter for android and now Touiteur. By far this the best twitter client for small usage of memory. It just fits well on my android phone using CyanogenMod-DS-5.0.8-test4. UI is far more better than the others. Simple RT , and many options to suit your needs.

    Download for Touiteur

There you go, some of the best and free apps your your android daily usage. You now can use your android to the fullest.

Donut by Laszlo - Most Stable 1.6 ROM

OK, by far I have tested so many rom for my HTC Dream aka G1. And the latest is OpenEclair ROM. For me Eclair is the best ROM but is not intend to be fit on my G1. After a month using OpenEclair, I give up. Mainly because of these reasons :-

    1. Too slow - From the startup boot, to even to recognize the call screen to popup. This is include, the browser, map and gmail.

    2. Sucked up my battery into half a day usage. Mind you, I am using 2300mAH battery. The Live Wallpaper is somewhat a resource hunger and will quickly drain your battery.

I want to use CyanogenMod 4.2.x but lately cyanogen busy with his BaconMod. So I searched the XDA Forum, about to try Super D ROM, with some nice feedback from user.

I stumble this polish rom cooker named Laszlo, and he make a wonderful themed rom, that is super fast! One is Donut by Laszlo and Eclair R5. Want to try eclair but I think I need a stable, usable day-to-day phone. I wipe OpenEclair and flash to Donut by Laszlo. So fast, flick from screen to screen is responsive, and most important is stable. Not even a force close since I have flashed it.

Now an update Donut by Laszlo 1.2. Just update it and as usual it is fast. Head to l-rom.googlecode.com/ and download it there.
